CBRC and Kelowna’s Living Positive Resource Centre hold Men’s Health Forum

The Men’s Health Forum in Kelowna welcomed Oliver Ferlatte and David Le from CBRC to the sunny Okanagan and the September 2012 weather did not disappoint us. Oliver presented the results of the Sex Now survey 2011.  By using postal codes, the Okanagan results provided insight into the experiences of the guys in our own community.  As coordinator of the Men’s Health Program, it was a pleasure to welcome the collaboration with CBRC to bring this event to our area.

Discrimination at Work

My writing career had two beginnings. First, I started work at the queer paper, where I had fun pumping out stories about queer life on U.B.C.’s campus. It was racy stuff by mainstream standards—complete with graphic depictions of gay sex—but nothing shocking for the readers of Xtra. The second beginning, though, came a year later when I began writing weekly reviews for a major daily paper. These two career tracks ran in tandem for a couple years without one world much bothering the other. Occasionally my editor at the big daily would read something I’d written in Xtra and give me an ironic headshake, but that was about the extent of the crossover.

There is not much attention paid to the differences between the meaning of the words homophobia and heterosexism. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that the distinction is more than just semantics: the choice of either word shapes how the issue of gay oppression is understood and thus our approach to developing solutions.

Kelowna Forum Discusses Findings from Sex Now Survey 2011

On September 14, 2012, four hundred kilometers and a half hour flight from Vancouver brought Olivier, CBRC research education director, and David, CBRC youth team leader, to the city of Kelowna. The vineyards, parks, and Okanagan Lake provided a picturesque backdrop for the CBRC's participation in a community forum hosted by the Living Positive Resource Centre (LPRC).
